Bear Paws Trading Post
Authentic Zapotec Wool Rugs from Oaxaca, Mexico
Southwestern Decor
Bear Paws Trading Post strives to offer its customers high quality rugs from around the world
at affordable prices.  Our rugs are the same quality that you will find in many expensive high
end shops.  We just choose to not make the mark up that these shops charge because we do
not have a physical storefront and therefore do not have the high overhead that many shops
have.

Our rugs and pillows are not produced by Native Americans.  Some are handwoven by the
Zapotec Indians of Oaxaca, Mexico.  Many are produced by hand weaving in Guatemala,
Ecuador and India.  All the rugs and weavings we offer for sale are premium top quality heavy
duty thick wool. Our rugs are extremely durable for high traffic areas.   They will provide your
home with years of warmth and beauty in design.  They are produced with soft high grade
luxurious sheep's wool.

Hand weaving started about 1,000 years ago by the nomads of the Middle East.  Traders
usually had the major effect over patterns, designs, color, and quality.  Weavers adapted
designs to absorb cultures from other parts of the world to upgrade craftsmanship and
marketability.  Beginning in the new world about 1700 to 1800 the Navajo Indians learned
hand weaving techniques from the Spanish and Pueblos.  Until the late 1800's the Navajos
simply wove blankets to wear for themselves and the chief's blankets that they traded.  What
most people think of Navajo designs were invented by early territorial traders using ideas from
photographs of Persian carpets mixed with Pre-Columbian architectural designs from the
various ruins of Mexico.  Made from sheep's wool, imported dyes the Navajo rugs of today
are very, very expensive.
